Deeply affected by their fate, he put his books aside to visit them. He spent many precious hours consoling them. He felt it was his duty to be there with the discouraged. ‘Building up their courage is the need of the hour,’ he thought.

He wished to be the strong fortress for the frightened. He was proud of organizing the workers to fight for justice. He was responsible for the agitation. Therefore, he had to stand by them in their time of difficulties.

That day, with a bit of uncertainty lurking in his mind, he walked into the locality. The unusual calm and silence frightened him. Instead of playing joyfully in the lanes, the children stood clinging to their mothers. Their eyes were full of fear and sadness. His smile failed to give them the courage to smile back at him. He too felt sad for them and he walked ahead, only to face an angry woman.

“You incited my husband,” she shouted.

Chinmay wanted to shout back louder in self-defense, but thoughts found no voice. He avoided her fiery eyes. Her voice cracked sorrowfully as she talked about her man.

“He is in jail. How do I to feed my children?”

“I told him to control the crowd,” Chinmay defended himself. “Who can bridle an excited horse?”

She wiped her tears. Her threadbare gown showed tears in awkward places. She sat down with a sigh, helpless. Her little child clung to her knees, saying, “Mummy, I am hungry.”

Chinmay looked away to hide his own tears. She saw him struggle with his own confusion. As if to console him, she cried aloud.

“He should have listened to you.”

“I never encouraged rioting,” Chinmay said in reply.

His words sounded, phony to him. His rebellious mind protested, “The fight for human rights and for justice entails violence. The unjust structures can never let go peacefully.”

He stood silent for a while. He shook head as if to deny the logical consequences of the struggle for justice. The young mother went back to her empty kitchen.
